NEW PORT CONTRACT MAKES YEAR A WINNER |
Commerce in Mid- and South Jefferson County boomed in 2003 with the Port of Port Arthur's capture of a lucrative South American contract. In May, the Port of Port Arthur announced a new contract with Aracruz Cellulose at an expected worth of more than $10 million in the first year alone, Aracruz officials said the company is consolidating its port activity in the U.S. to include just three ports and Port Arthur was perfect for their needs. As the biggest hard wood producer in the world with 2 million tons of eucalyptus pulp from plantations in South America, Aracruz sells products in Europe, North America and Asia. More informatin about the company is available through its Web site at www.aracruz.com.br. To meet the increasing need for more capacity at the Port, construction of a new $3.5 million transit shed was coompleted Aug. 28th and was filled to capacity within six days. Plans to add more space is ongoing. Also in December, Port Commissioners received and opened bids for "Project A" rail yard upgrades inside the Port facility. President Raymond Johnson said the project will raise the rail yard and the $1.25 million project is paid for through a Department of Commerce economic development grant. Port expansions and improvements are crucial to the economic development and growth of the City of Port Arthur, Johnson said. We'll hit the ground in 2004 in the same progressive manner, bringing a lot of development to the waterfront and success to the Port as we've done in the past years. "As the Port grows, so does the city grow."
